Shrock confident of UCFC’s chances as Philippines Football League gets set for kick-off

Manila: The Philippines Football League (PFL) kicks off on Sunday with United City FC (UCFC) – formerly known as Ceres Negros - setting their sights on winning the title.

With UCFC having retained most of the players who powered Ceres Negros to the title last season, skipper Stephan Shrock is confident of a successful season.

“My team is pretty well prepared. The boys didn’t lack in motivation and discipline during the lockdown which was very hard for them, keeping sharp, especially mentally fresh. It was good to see them all happy, fit and eager,” said Shrock to local media.

Shrock, however, accepts that UCFC will not have it easy.

“We have a big target on our back. Everybody wants to have the top position especially with an AFC Champions League spot available.”

The club went through a change in name following the purchase of Ceres Negros by sports marketing firm MMC Sportz Asia, who acquired the club from previous owner and chairman, Leo Rey Yanson.

Ceres Negros won the league title for the past three seasons and UCFC, led by head coach, Trevor Morgan, will be aiming to continue the run.

Iloilo City-based Kaya FC are expected to be UCFC’s main challengers Maharlika Manila, Mendiola 1991, Stallion Laguna and Azkal Development Team, who are managed by the Philippines Football Federation, are the ones team in the fray.

UCFC play Maharlika on Sunday, with Azkals facing Mendiola and Stallions hosting Kaya FC.
