Thailand, Philippines book semis spots

Kuala Lumpur: Thailand and Philippines sealed their berths in the 2018 AFF Cup semi-finals with Thailand defeating Singapore 3-0 and the Philippines holding Indonesia 0-0 in their final Group B ties on Sunday.

Five-time champions Thailand will play Malaysia next while Philippines will take on Group A winners Vietnam in the two-leg semi-finals.

Thailand 3-0 Singapore

Bangkok: Thailand eased past Singapore 3-0 at the Rajamangala Stadium to win Group B.

Singapore had a fighting chance to advance following their 6-1 victory over Timor-Leste last Wednesday.

The Lions, however, fell behind 12 minutes in after Irfan Fandi turned the ball into his own net following a corner.

Fandi Ahmad's men conceded another goal 11 minutes later as Supachai Jaided took advantage of Zulqarnaen Suzliman's bad clearance and the forward tucked the ball past Hassan Sunny.

Hoping to turn things around, Fandi introduced Faris Ramli for Zulqarnaen at the start of the second half but Singapore found it hard to break down their opponents.

Singapore had a golden opportunity to score in the 56th minute but Ikhsan Fandi could not find the target as he sent his free-kick wide off the mark.

Tournament top scorer Adisak Kraisorn showed his prowess when he scored his eighth goal of the campaign in the 89th minute after collecting Sanrawat Dechmitr's pass and coolly finishing with a low drive past Hassan as Thailand claimed top spot in the group.

Indonesia 0-0 Philippines

Jakarta: The Philippines sealed a spot in the last four after playing to a 0-0 stalemate with Indonesia at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.

The Philippines, who will play in the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019, faced an Indonesian side who were already eliminated from the competition.

Both teams were equally matched as they cancelled out each other in a goalless first half.

It was Indonesia doing most of the attacking in the second half, with Riko Simanjuntak looking to create chances in the final third, but they struggled to find a way past Sven-Goran Eriksson’s side, who were well organised.

The Philippines almost snatched the win late on when Manuel Ott's free-kick forced a fine save from Indonesia goalkeeper Andritany Ardhiyasa.

The draw was enough for the Philippines to advance to the semi-finals where they will face Vietnam, while Indonesia's campaign ended with just one win from four matches.
