A curling shot from Nguyen Thu Tuyet Dung gave Vietnam their place in the final as they saw off a spirited Philippines side playing in their first AFF Women's Championship semi-final.

“It was not easy to play against the Philippines. They defended well and even Thailand struggled against them,” said Vietnam head coach Mai Duc Chung. “At the start, we did not play well and this is one area which we need to improve. We need to settle down early.”

After a tight opening 30 minutes, Philippines took the lead in bizarre fashion as a pressing move from them saw Tran Thi Hong Nhu’s back pass taking a bounce before going over goalkeeper Tran Thi Kim Thanh and settling into the net in the 35th minute.

Huynh Nhu, however, drew Vietnam level when she finished a quick counter-attacking move started by Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy in the 41st minute.

Vietnam took control from the start of the second half and Tuyet Dung scored what would eventually prove to be the winner with a curling effort in the 57th minute.

The Philippines tried to mount a fightback but it was not to be and they will face Myanmar in the bronze-medal playoff on Tuesday.

Thailand, who faced Myanmar in the second semi-final, took the lead in the 20th minute through Pitsamai Somsai and were firmly in control from there on.

After a frustrating wait, Thailand doubled their lead in the 81st minute through Rattikan Thongsombut.

Silawan Intamee confirmed Thailand's place in the final with her strike in the 88th minute although Myanmar managed a consolation through captain Khin Marlar Tun three minutes into added time.

Tuesday's fixtures (all times local) - Final: Thailand vs Vietnam (18:00); Third-place Playoff: Myanmar vs Philippines (15:00).
