West Asia Wrap: Leaders Al Duhail held in QSL return


Doha: Al Duhail dropped points in the race for the Qatar Stars League title after being held to a 1-1 draw by Umm Salal on Saturday.

Leaders Al Duhail, who went into the tie just a point ahead of Al Rayyan, took the lead through Qatar international forward Almoez Ali's spotkick in the 49th minute.

Umm Salal, however, equalised through Ayyoub Azzi in the 52nd minute as Al Sadd moved to 43 points with four matches remaining.

Al Rayyan had kicked off the resumption of the QSL after the COVID-19 enforced suspenson with a 2-1 win over Qatar SC on Friday.

Defending champions Al Sadd, meanwhile, defeated Al Khor 2-1 with 2019 AFC Player of the Year Akram Afif scoring in the 25th and 45+2 minutes.

The win kept Al Sadd, who played without head coach Xavi in the dugout, in third place with 35 points.

Xavi had announced hours before Saturday's match that he had tested positive for COVID-19.

In other matches, Al Gharafa defeated Al Arabi 1-0 to take a firm grip on fourth place, Al Shahania beat Al Ahli 3-1 while Al Wakrah and Al Sailiya shared points in a goalless draw.
