Wu Lei signs four-year contract extension with Espanyol

Barcelona: China PR international Wu Lei has extended his contract with RCD Espanyol in a deal that keeps the striker at the Spanish club until June 2024.

The 28-year-old had been linked with a move away from the Barcelona-based side following their relegation from the top flight of Spanish football at the end of last season before publicly committing himself to Espanyol earlier in the month.

The extension, which was finalised on Monday, means Wu Lei will be 32 years old when his contract expires and he has set his sights on ensuring the club make an immediate return to La Liga following their last-place finish in the 2019/20 campaign.

"I am very happy and proud to be able to renew the contract with the team,” Wu told the club’s official website. “I firmly believe that through hard work we will return to La Liga as soon as possible.”

Wu joined Espanyol in January 2019 from Shanghai SIPG after helping the club to their first Chinese Super League title and in his first season-and-a-half in Spain he has scored 11 times in 65 games, including netting twice in the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League.
