Wuhan Jiangda power to Chinese Women’s Super League title

Kunming: Wuhan Jiangda became Chinese Women’s Super League champions for the first time, defeating champions Jiangsu Suning 4-0 in the championship play-off on Sunday.

Goals from international stars Temwa Chawinga and Bia Zaneratto were followed by an own goal from Zhai Qingqei and a further strike from Chinese international Lyu Yueyun, as Liu Lin’s side sealed the title in emphatic style.

Jiangsu had been chasing their second consecutive league title under Frenchman Jocelyn Precheur, but they were well beaten by a rampant Wuhan.

Playing against her sister Tabitha, who is also a star of the Chinese domestic scene, Malawi’s Temwa Chawinga opened the scoring for Wuhan in the 27th minute after being supplied by Brazilian international Zaneratto.

Jiangsu squandered a chance to equalise when Ni Mengie was unable to convert a penalty kick before half-time, and Zaneratto – also known as Beatriz – made them pay when she doubled the lead in the 58th minute.

Wuhan were almost out of sight when Zhai put the ball in her own net with 24 minutes remaining, and they put the icing on the cake when Wang Shuang teed up Lyu for the fourth.

Wang, a former Paris Saint-Germain star and a Wuhan local who spent more two months in isolation as the pandemic struck in the early months of 2020, was instrumental in the win, providing a number of key passes throughout.

The 2020 Chinese Women’s Super League was held across two stages from August 23, with Wuhan emerging victorious having lost only once in a total of 13 matches.
