Dejan Damjanovic signs for Hong Kong's Kitchee SC

Hong Kong: Veteran striker Dejan Damjanovic will continue his quest to become the AFC Champions League’s all-time leading scorer in the 2021 campaign after signing for reigning Hong Kong Premier League champions Kitchee.

The 39-year-old, who is currently second on the list behind recently-retired former Korea Republic international Lee Dong-gook, was unveiled by the 10-time Hong Kong champions in a social media post on Saturday.

He is expected to join the club next month after he has undergone a period of quarantine following his arrival in Hong Kong.

Damjanovic has scored 36 times – one fewer than Lee – for three clubs in the continental club championship and has signed for Kitchee after spending last season with K League side Daegu FC.

The former Montenegro international spent his most successful years in Korea Republic, winning the K League title with FC Seoul in 2010, 2012 and 2013 as well as helping the club to the final of the 2013 AFC Champions League, where they lost to Guangzhou Evergrande.

Damjanovic also played for two seasons in China PR, leaving FC Seoul in early 2014 to join Jiangsu Sainty before signing for Beijing Guoan, where he spent 18 months only to return for a second spell with FC Seoul ahead of the 2016 K League season.

After a further two seasons with FC Seoul, Damjanovic joined rivals Suwon Samsung Bluewings, where he spent another two years ahead of his one-year stint with Daegu FC.

Damjanovic joins a Kitchee side that has yet to win in the new Hong Kong Premier League season, sitting on two points from their opening two games of the current campaign. Play in the competition has been suspended since last month due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
