Geylang International add Comvalius for AFC Cup push

Singapore: Geylang International have made a statement ahead of their participation in the 2021 AFC Cup, securing the services of veteran Dutch striker Sylvano Comvalius in a deal confirmed on Wednesday evening.

The towering forward, 33, will lead the line for the Singaporean club in their first continental outing in over a decade, having most recently appeared for Maltese outfit Silema Wanderers.

In a career spanning more than 13 years and nearly as many countries, Comvalius is best known for his prolific goalscoring exploits in Indonesia, where he scored a record 37 goals for Bali United in the 2017 season.

Speaking from Amsterdam, Comvalius revealed his happiness at sealing the move to Singapore's Premier League, the sixth Asian league of his career.

“I have played in many different Asian countries, (but) Singapore has always been on my bucket list,” the striker was quoted as saying by the club.

“I think, with Geylang International, I have found the right club. I’m really looking forward to my new adventure, and I can’t wait to get started.”

A journeyman with a résumé like few others, Comvalius began his senior career at Dutch, Maltese and Scottish clubs and had a taste of Asian football with Al Salmiya in Kuwait before taking in spells in Scotland, Kazakhstan, China PR, Ukraine and Germany.

But it was after his 2017 move to Indonesia that he had his greatest impact, piling on 37 goals in just 34 games for Bali United to emerge as the standout striker in Indonesian football.

Moves followed to Thailand, with Suphanburi, and Malaysia, with Kuala Lumpur FA, but Comvalius returned to Indonesia for additional spells with Arema and Persipura Jayapura, before returning to Malta following the pandemic-forced shutdown of Indonesian club football.

Despite his extensive history in the Asian game, Comvalius has never featured in the AFC Cup, but he will likely get his chance in Group I of the 2021 edition, where Geylang have been drawn alongside Terengganu, Kaya FC-Iloilo and either Shan United or Ayeyawady United.

Before the continental action gets underway, Geylang will kick off their Singapore Premier League campaign against Tanjong Pagar United on March 14.
