Jones, Al Shehri among quintet to leave Al Nassr

Riyadh: Saudi Premier League side Al Nassr have announced Australia international goalkeeper Brad Jones and Saudi Arabia’s FIFA World Cup star Yahya Al Shehri have left the club.

The pair are among five high profile players to depart the 2020 AFC Champions League semi-finalists following the conclusion of the 2020-21 season, in which Al Nassr finished a disappointing sixth in the domestic league standings, 15 points adrift of champions Al Hilal SFC.

Brazilian defender Maicon Pereira, who was part of the Al Nassr side that won the Saudi Premier League title in 2019, Saudi international Abdulaziz Al Dawsari and Raed Al Ghamdi have also left.

Jones signed for Al Nassr three years ago after a successful career in Europe, where the 39-year-old played for Middlesbrough, Liverpool and Feyenoord before moving to Saudi Arabia.

Al Shehri joined Al Nassr in 2013 from Ettifaq and spent eight years with the club in a spell that was broken by a six-month loan with Spanish club Leganes in the run-up to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Al Nassr reached the last four of last year’s AFC Champions League and qualified for the Round of 16 of the 2021 edition after winning Group D of this year’s competition. They will face Tractor FC from Islamic Republic of Iran in the next round in September.

The club recently revealed they had signed Brazilian striker Anderson Talisca from Guangzhou FC as they start to rebuild ahead of next season.
