Afif delighted with Qatar’s qualification; Westwood targets bigger things for Afghanistan

Kuwait City: Captain Akram Afif was proud to see Qatar pass a tough Kuwait test to secure a 2-1 win that clinched their spot in the third round of the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers and AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™ on Tuesday.

All three goals were scored in a space of four minutes late in the game with Almoez Ali’s double doing the trick for the reigning AFC Asian Cup champions, confirming them as Group A winners with two matches to spare.

Group A: Kuwait 1-2 Qatar

Kuwait City: Qatar left it late to defeat Kuwait 2-1 in Group E of the Preliminary Joint Qualification - Round 2 for the FIFA World Cup 2026 and AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™ at Sabah Al Salem Stadium on Tuesday.

The win confirmed Qatar a spot in the third round of the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers and also ensured they will be at Saudi Arabia 2027 to defend their back-to-back AFC Asian Cup titles.

Qatar showed real quality in second half, says Lopez

Doha: Marquez Lopez was proud of Qatar's ability to increase their tempo in the 3-0 win over Kuwait in Group A of the Preliminary Joint Qualification – Round 2 for the FIFA World Cup 2026 and AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™ on Thursday.

After a goalless first half, Akram Afif scored twice and Ahmed Al Rawi the other as Qatar all but made sure of their place in the third round of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers and spot in the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 with their third consecutive victory.

Doha: Qatar turned on the power in the second half to defeat Kuwait 3-0 on Thursday to remain perfect in Group A of the Preliminary Joint Qualification – Round 2 for the FIFA World Cup 2026 and the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™.

AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023™ MVP and Top Scorer Akram Afif netted twice and the Maroons could well seal their place in the third round of the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers and AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 with a second win over Kuwait in the reverse  fixture on Tuesday.

Qatar's Al Haydos announces international retirement

Doha: Hassan Al Haydos, who skippered Qatar to a second successive AFC Asian Cup™ title in February, has retired from international football.

The Qatar Football Association (QFA) announced Al Haydos' decision on Saturday, bringing down the curtain on a 16-year career highlighted by back-to-back AFC Asian Cup victories.
 
Al Haydos is the most capped player for Qatar with 182 appearances, scoring 41 times.

Tournament expanded to 48 teams; Qatar to host 5 editions from 2025

Zurich: The FIFA Council has confirmed that the FIFA U-17 World Cup will be expanded to 48 teams and be held annually rather than biennially, as part of the governing body’s steadfast commitment to youth football.

It was also confirmed that the next five editions of the competition, starting in 2025, will take place in Qatar.
