Lopetegui looks at positives as Qatar bid farewell

Seattle: Qatar's FIFA World Cup 2026 journey may have ended on Wednesday but head coach Julen Lopetegui said it was a campaign that the West Asian side can learn and build on.

A 3-1 defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina meant Qatar fell short of staying in contention for a place in the Round of 32 but will depart having earned their first ever point on the global stage.

Seattle: Qatar's FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign came to an end following a 3-1 defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina in their concluding Group B tie on Wednesday.

The defeat at the Seattle Stadium meant Qatar ended their journey on the global stage with a single point while victory took Bosnia-Herzegovina into the knockout stage for the first time.

Julen Lopetegui’s side go into the match with one point from two games, level with Bosnia-Herzegovina and knowing that only victory will realistically keep alive their hopes of reaching the Round of 32.

Canada and Switzerland have taken command of the group with four points each, leaving Qatar and Bosnia and Herzegovina in a direct battle to stay in contention as third place could still offer a route into the knockout stage.

Vancouver: Head coach Julen Lopetegui said his focus is on the recovery of his Qatar players following their 6-0 defeat to Canada in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group B tie on Thursday.

Having seen his side create history by claiming their first ever FIFA World Cup point in a 1-1 draw with Switzerland just days earlier, it all unravelled in Vancouver.

Not only were Qatar reduced to nine men, Canada's Ismael Kone suffered a broken leg following a tackle from Assim Madibo, which led to the latter being sent off.

Vancouver: Canada defeated nine-man Qatar 6-0 to clinch their first ever FIFA World Cup victory on Thursday in a Group B match marred by a serious injury to midfielder Ismael Kone.

A Jonathan David hat-trick, one apiece form Cyle Larin and Nathan Saliba as well as a Qatar own goal sealed a momentous victory for the Canadians, who now need only a draw against Switzerland in their final match to finish top of the group.

Boualem Khoukhi's late equaliser sealed Qatar their first ever FIFA World Cup point, with their debut as hosts four years ago ending in three defeats.

Santa Clara: Qatar earned the first FIFA World Cup point in their history when they stunned Switzerland with a late equaliser to grab a 1-1 draw in both sides' opener on Saturday.

A Breel Embolo penalty had broken the deadlock for Switzerland early in the first half in Santa Clara, before the Swiss were made to pay by a Miro Muheim own goal.

Paris: After a decade-long march up the FIFA World Rankings, co-hosts Canada are hoping to crown their rise by claiming a piece of FIFA World Cup history in Group B - a first ever win.

In two previous appearances at the FIFA World Cup - the 1986 edition in Mexico and the 2022 tournament in Qatar - Canada have a perfect record of six defeats from six matches.

The co-hosts are aiming to buck that trend in a first round group that includes Bosnia-Herzegovina, Qatar and Switzerland.
