JDT’s Munoz upbeat; Sanfrecce’s Gaul relishing return leg

Iskandar Puteri: Xisco Munoz heaped praise on his players after Johor Darul Ta’zim took a significant step towards a place in the AFC Champions League Elite 2025/26™ quarter-finals with a 3-1 win against Sanfrecce Hiroshima in the first leg of their Round of 16 tie on Wednesday.

It was a magical night for the home fans at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium as strikes from Ager Aketxe, Bergson and Marcos Guilherme gave the Malaysian champions a 3-0 lead before Nene’s own goal narrowed the margin as JDT moved closer to a first-ever quarter-final appearance.

Seoul: Michael Skibbe expressed satisfaction after his Vissel Kobe side edged FC Seoul 1-0 in their AFC Champions League Elite 2025/26™ Round of 16 first leg tie on Wednesday.

Matheus Thuler’s first half strike gave the Japanese outfit a lead to defend in next week’s return leg with Skibbe vowing that Vissel will be ready for another all-out contest.

Nielsen expects a sharper Japan; Chinese Taipei’s Prasobchoke satisfied despite defeat

Perth: Head coach Nils Nielsen, while pleased with Japan’s composure against defensive-minded Chinese Taipei, admitted his side could have done more in their AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026™ Group C opener on Wednesday.

Chinese Taipei weathered wave after wave of pressure but ultimately succumbed as Momoko Tanikawa and Kiko Seike struck in the second half to secure the two-time champions a 2-0 win at the Perth Rectangular Stadium.

Nielsen acknowledged there was still room for improvement, with Japan registering a whopping 30 attempts on goal.

R16 - 1st Leg: Johor Darul Ta’zim (MAS) 3-1 Sanfrecce Hiroshima (JPN)

Iskandar Puteri: Goals from Ager Aketxe, Bergson da Silva and Marcus Guilherme secured Johor Darul Ta’zim a 3-1 win over 10-man Sanfrecce Hiroshima on Wednesday to put the Malaysian side in control of their AFC Champions League Elite 2025/26™ Round of 16 tie with the J-League side.

Kim Joo-sung’s 26th minute sending off hampered the prospects of the visitors with Aketxe putting his side in front in the 52nd minute before goals from Bergson and Guilherme in the 63rd and 85th minutes respectively moved JDT into a commanding position.
 
Nene’s own goal allowed Hiroshima to pull one back with four minutes remaining and give the visitors reason to be hopeful ahead of the second leg in Japan next week.

Seoul: Brazilian defender Matheus Thuler headed in from close range to earn Vissel Kobe a 1-0 win over FC Seoul in the first leg of the J1 League side’s AFC Champions League Elite 2025/26™ Round of 16 clash at Seoul World Cup Stadium on Wednesday.

The Japanese outfit, attempting to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2022, will take a narrow advantage into the second leg in Kobe next week after goalkeeper Daiya Maekawa saved a 66th minute penalty from FC Seoul substitute Leonardo Ruiz.

Suita: Gamba Osaka dominated but had to come from behind to force a 1-1 stalemate with Thailand’s Ratchaburi FC in the first leg of their AFC Champions League Two 2025/26™ quarter-final at the Suita City Football Stadium on Wednesday.

Daniel Ting’s first half goal was cancelled out by Gaku Nawata’s 84th-minute strike as the Japanese side were held off by a firm Ratchaburi defence, ensuring it will be all to play for in next week's second leg in Thailand.

Perth: Japan worked hard to secure a 2-0 win over Chinese Taipei in their AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026™ Group C opener at the Perth Rectangular Stadium on Wednesday.

Frustrated for long periods by resolute Chinese Taipei defending, second half goals from Momoko Tanikawa and Kiko Seike took them over the line as they kicked off their campaign for a third title with three points.
