Ri’s tactical masterclass secures DPR Korea passage to Brazil

Gold Coast: Head coach Ri Song Ho's firmness in decision making paved the way for DPR Korea’s 4-0 win over Chinese Taipei as they sealed qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027 on Thursday.

Ri decided to send on Ri Hak in place of Choe Il Son in the 31st minute and the switch paid off almost instantly with Hong Song Ok opening their account a minute later.

DPR Korea confirm ticket to global showpiece

Gold Coast: DPR Korea booked their FIFA Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027 ticket with a 4-0 win against Chinese Taipei in their playoff at the Gold Coast Stadium on Thursday. 

Hong Song Ok starred with a hat-trick and the victory means DPR Korea will return to the global showpiece for the first time since 2011 while Chinese Taipei’s qualification hopes now depend on advancing past the Inter-Confederation Playoffs later in 2026.

Gold Coast: Four teams will be vying for two FIFA Women's World Cup Brazil 2027 spots when they meet in the playoffs in Gold Coast on Thursday.

Uzbekistan will face the Philippines while DPR Korea will take on Chinese Taipei, with the winners securing their spots at the global showpiece.

The losing teams will have one final opportunity to qualify via the Inter-Confederation Playoffs, which will offer an additional two tickets. Australia, China PR, Japan and Korea Republic have already secured their spots after advancing to the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026™ semi-finals.

A lesson well learnt, says DPR Korea’s Ri

Perth: Head coach Ri Song Ho praised his players despite DPR Korea falling to a 2-1 defeat against Australia in the quarter-finals of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026™ at Perth Rectangular Stadium on Friday.

The three-time champions took the game to Australia and had opportunities to win with Ri saying he could not fault his players' efforts.

Q-final: Australia hold off DPR Korea to stay on title track

Perth: Australia progressed to the semi-finals of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026™ with a hard fought 2-1 win against DPR Korea at the Perth Rectangular Stadium on Friday.

Sam Kerr played a starring role, scoring one and making the other for Alanna Kennedy as Australia - who fell in the quarter-finals four years ago - advanced to a last four meeting with either defending champions China PR or Chinese Taipei. The win also secured their ticket to the FIFA Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027. 

While DPR Korea’s title dream was dashed, they can walk tall after a spirited performance and will now set their sights on the FIFA Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027 playoff against either China PR or Chinese Taipei on Thursday.

Australia, winners of the 2010 edition, are determined to go all the way after exiting in the quarter-finals in 2022, while three-time winners DPR Korea are vying to lift the trophy for the first  time since 2008.

Also at stake is automatic qualification for the FIFA Women's World Cup 2027, adding spice to the tie.
