Kuala Lumpur: The AFC has released a mini booklet as its latest tool in the fight against match-fixing which will be distributed at AFC competitions throughout the continent.
The pocket-sized booklet reminds players, coaches, match officials and administrators to take the time to read the disciplinary regulations of their respective FAs and the AFC. Similarly, the booklet also propounds the ‘3Rs’ to potential targets of match-fixing: Recognise (understand what is happening to you), Reject (say ‘NO’ immediately) and Report (inform your FA or AFC immediately).
A further message in the booklet states that people behind match-fixing are dangerous individuals and they will never forget those who agree to manipulate a match, and that match-fixers are known to threaten the families and friends of players and match officials.
The booklet also lays down the sanctions offenders may face such as a lifetime ban from involvement in football, heavy fines and imprisonment. Finally, information is also provided on how to report any information pertaining to match-fixing.
The booklet is produced by the AFC MA and Development Department’s Integrity Unit.
“In line with the AFC Integrity Action Plan, this booklet falls under the prevention measures (specifically, awareness raising and training) being adopted by the AFC. It is among a number of mediums which will be used in an effort to enable targets of match manipulation to recognise, reject and report any attempts to fix the outcome of matches in AFC competitions,” Sanjeevan Balasingam, the department’s Director, told the-afc.com.
“However, the initiative can only be a success if all AFC Member Associations actively work with the continental football body to fight match-fixing and corruption. Rest assured, in line with our zero-tolerance policy against corruption, the AFC stands by its Member Associations in fighting this menace threatening Asian football”.
