ASEAN Leagues Wrap: Bali and Ceres extend leads, Hougang stay top

Kuala Lumpur: With the majority of leagues in ASEAN having begun their breaks ahead of the international matches, the only action over the weekend took place in Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and Timor-Leste.

Both Bali United and Ceres Negros are now in particularly strong positions in their respective leagues, while the race in Singapore is heating up between the top two.

Ashgabat: Two goals from Nguyen Van Quyet helped Vietnam’s Hanoi FC advance to the 2019 AFC Cup Inter-Zone Final with a 5-4 aggregate win over Altyn Asyr FC of Turkmenistan, following a 2-2 second-leg draw at Kopetdag Stadium on Tuesday.

Van Quyet extended Hanoi’s aggregate lead with an early poacher’s effort, then restored the two-goal buffer after Altyn Asyr captain Serdar Geldiyev netted the first of his two penalties just before half-time.

Geldiyev’s second successful spot-kick set up a grandstand finish with eight minutes remaining, but Hanoi survived the hosts’ desperate search for an equaliser to set up a meeting with either Abahani Limited Dhaka or 4.25 SC in the Inter-Zone Final.

Ashgabat: Hanoi FC midfielder Moses Oloya is overjoyed at his side’s qualification for the 2019 AFC Cup Inter-Zone Final, declaring that the Vietnamese champions produced their best football in their successful second leg tie against Turkmenistan’s Altyn Asyr on Tuesday.

With a 3-2 aggregate lead under their belts from the first match of the two-legged tie, Hanoi navigated a first-ever trip to Ashgabat’s Kopetdag Stadium to emerge with a 5-4 aggregate win and set up a meeting with DPR Korea’s 4.25 SC.

A brace from captain Nguyen Van Quyet proved crucial for Chu Dinh Nghiem’s side, who advanced despite two successful penalty kicks from Altyn Asyr skipper Serdar Geldiyev.

Chonburi: Vietnam emerged as champions for the third time, ending Thailand’s bid for a fourth successive title with Huynh Nhu scoring in a 1-0 extra-time win in the 2019 AFF Women’s Championship Final on Tuesday.

The highest ranked side in the tournament, Mai Duc Chung’s side lived up their billing to add the regional title to the 2017 SEA Games gold medal they won in Kuala Lumpur.

Earlier, Myanmar defeated the Philippines 3-0 to finish in third place.
