Abu Dhabi: After a 2-1 Preliminary Stage 2 win over JSW Bengaluru, Al Wehdat’s final hurdle on their quest for a maiden appearance in the AFC Champions League Group Stage is Tuesday’s tough trip to Emirati side Al Wahda.
The Abu Dhabi-based club may not have reached the Group Stage since 2011, but they have AFC Champions League history, having appeared six times and reached the semi-finals in 2007 as well as the quarter-finals three years earlier. Al Wahda also boast one of the Play-offs' premier strikers in Argentine Sebastian Tagliabue, the United Arab Emirates Pro League’s top scorer last season.
Visitors Al Wehdat have an impressive domestic pedigree with 15 league titles to their name and with a third successive Jordan Premier League wrapped up last year. At continental level, though, they are yet to make an impact at the highest level, having never appeared in the AFC Champions League Group Stage despite reaching three AFC Cup semi-finals in the past decade.
