AFC women’s match officials poised to create history
Bangkok: Asian football history will be made in the AFC Champions League 2022™ Group Stage later today as Yoshimi Yamashita from Japan is poised to become the first female referee to manage a tie in the Continent’s premier men’s club competition.
Alongside Yamashita, Assistant Referees, Makoto Bozono and Naomi Teshirogi have also been appointed to officiate tonight’s Group G match between Melbourne City FC and Jeonnam Dragons, which is scheduled to be held at the Pathum Thani Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand at 9:00pm (local time).
Preview - Group G: Melbourne City FC (AUS) v Jeonnam Dragons (KOR)
Pathum Thani: Melbourne City FC boss Patrick Kisnboro believes his players are thriving off the pitch ahead of Thursday’s AFC Champions League™ 2022 Matchday Three clash against Jeonnam Dragons.
The reigning Australian champions and current Group G leaders come into the fixture as warm favourites after resting several key players and still securing a comprehensive 3-0 win against United City FC on their last hit out for what was their first victory on the Asian stage.
But as strong as City have been on the pitch, Kisnorbo has been equally impressed by his squad’s progress off it.
Preview - Group F: Daegu FC (KOR) v Urawa Red Diamonds (JPN)
Buriram: It promises to be an exciting all-East Asian affair when Korea Republic’s Daegu FC clash with Urawa Red Diamonds of Japan at the Buriram Stadium in Group F of the AFC Champions League™ 2022 on Thursday.
The K League club will be looking to bounce back after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Lion City Sailors FC on Matchday Two, which their Brazilian tactician Alexandre Gama is confident off.
Preview - Group G: BG Pathum United (THA) v United City FC (PHI)
Pathum Thani: BG Pathum United head coach Makoto Teguramori has hailed the strength of the contribution made by his side’s local players ahead of Thursday’s AFC Champions League™ 2022 Matchday Three clash against United City FC.
Four points from their opening two matches has the group hosts believing a second successive trip to the Round of 16 is well within their grasp, and they’ll have the opportunity to further strengthen their position when they face a United City outfit which is still searching for their first point in Group G.
The Thai contingent in the BG Pathum squad has contributed handily to their early success, with all three of their goals, and all three assists, provided by locally sourced talent, something which Teguramori believes is a significant asset.
Preview - Group F: Shandong Taishan FC (CHN) v Lion City Sailors FC (SGP)
Buriram: Head coach Kim Do-hoon wants his Lion City Sailors FC side to maintain their confidence and focus ahead of their AFC Champions League™ 2022 Group F tie against Shandong Taishan FC on Thursday.
The Sailors are riding high following their historic 3-0 win over Daegu FC on Matchday Two, but Kim has warned the Singapore champions against complacency when they play a youthful Shandong Taishan.
Preview - Group I: Ulsan Hyundai FC (KOR) v Guangzhou FC (CHN)
Johor Bahru: Head coach Hong Myung-bo remains upbeat despite Ulsan Hyundai’s unconvincing start to this year’s AFC Champions League™ and believes that Thursday’s Group I battle against bottom-club Guangzhou FC at the Tan Sri Dato' Hj Hassan Yunos Stadium will serve as the pivotal turning point to reverse his side’s fortunes.
The 2020 and 2012 champions currently occupy third in the standings, with the 1-1 opening day draw against Kawasaki Frontale their only point on the board and following their Match Day Two defeat to Johor Darul Ta’zim, the Horangi face the daunting prospect of failing to qualify for the Round of 16 for the first time since 2017.
