Shanghai: Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has left Al Ain to join Chinese Super League title challengers Shanghai SIPG.
Gyan will leave the UAE champions on Wednesday to undertake his medical in China before signing a new contract with the Sven-Goran Eriksson-led side.
“I want to really thank the entire Al Ain club and its fans for the support they have given me in my time here,” Gyan was quoted as saying on his website.
“At Al Ain we were able to achieve a lot of things and I tell you this club will remain in my heart forever.
“It is however time to embrace a new challenge and hopefully this new challenge will be as successful or even better than my time here at Al Ain.”
Gyan joined Al Ain from English Premier League side Sunderland in 2011 and has led the side to three UAE Pro League titles, one President's Cup and one Super Cup, scoring 113 goals in all competitions.
He also helped the Al Ain reach the semi-finals of the 2014 AFC Champions League, ending that campaign as the top scorer with 12 goals. He was subsequently named the AFC's Foreign Player of the Year.
In the competition’s current edition, Gyan helped Al Ain reach the Round of 16 where they succumbed to an away-goals loss to fellow UAE side Al Ahli.
