Buriram: Buriram United wrapped up a dominant 2015 after completing the treble by winning the Thai FA Cup following a 3-1 win over Muangthong United in Saturday’s final.
The Thunder Castle opened the scoring at the Suphachalasai Stadium on the stroke of half-time when Andres Tunez coolly sent Kawin Thamsatchanan the wrong way from the penalty spot, after Diogo was adjudged to have been fouled by Piyaphon Phanichakul inside the area.
Six minutes after the restart, they doubled their advantage after Diogo found space on the right and floated a lovely cross to Go Seul-ki, who made no mistake in sending a looping header into the back of the net.
The contest was effectively over in the 70th minute as Jakkaphan Kaewprom latched onto a loose ball 25 yards out, before curling a sublime effort past Kawin at full stretch.
Muangthong did manage to pull one back with ten minutes remaining when Mario Gjurovski calmly finished into the bottom corner, after being released by Chananan Pombuppha’s clever through-pass.
But it just was not to be for the Twin Qilins, and their miserable evening was compounded in injury-time when they were reduced to ten men after Gjurovski was issued his marching orders.
The triumph ensured Buriram finished their season on a high, following their triumphs in the Thai Premier League and Thai League Cup as well, and enter next season’s AFC Champions League brimming with confidence as they embark on a fifth successive continental campaign.
Meanwhile, despite Saturday's defeat, Muangthong will also be competing in the 2016 Champions League after qualifying as runners-up in the Premier League, although they will enter the competition in the second preliminary round.
