Fighting spirit Viettel’s strength in AFC Champions League, says Que Ngoc Hai

Bangkok: Football in Vietnam has made significant progress at the national team level in recent years and that trend is now emerging at club continental stage with Viettel FC making their first-ever appearance in the AFC Champions League. 

The last time a Vietnamese club reached the AFC Champions League group stage was Becamex Binh Doung in 2016, and five years later, the honour of representing the nation has fallen on Viettel FC.

Group J: Port FC defeat Guangzhou FC to revive AFC Champions League hopes

Buriram: Port FC picked up their first-ever AFC Champions League victory on Sunday as goals from Elias Dolah, Pakorn Prempak and Philip Roller earned the Thai League side a 3-0 win over Guangzhou FC in a Group J tie.

Elias opened the scoring in the 21st minute and Pakorn headed in a second 15 minutes after the interval to ignite the debutant club’s challenge for a place in the knockout rounds after Thursday’s loss to Kitchee. Roller added the third 14 minutes from time.

The loss was the second in a row for a youthful Guangzhou side undone again by vulnerability in the heart of their defence three days after being ruthlessly exposed in similar fashion by Cerezo Osaka.
