Doha: Marwan Hussein scored twice as Al Shorta handed Al Jazeera a 4-0 thrashing in the final round of games in Group B as both sides advanced to the Round of 16 in the 2015 AFC Cup on Tuesday.
Hussein netted in the 19th and 53rd minutes while Caion and Waleed Salim found the back of the net in the 50th and 76th minutes respectively to secure safe passage for Al Shorta.
The win means Al Shorta join Al Jazeera on nine points from their six group games and the Iraqis take top spot in the group based on their superior head-to-head record over their Jordanian counterparts.
“We achieved what we wanted from the match,” said Al Shorta coach Thair Jassam. “We controlled the proceedings right from the start and the players converted the dominance that we had into four goals which helped us win with such a big result.
“We studied our opponents well before the match and we played with different tactics. We went into the match with only one chance and this helped us to play with great concentration to achieve our target.”
Hussein put Al Shorta in front after just 19 minutes with a close range finish and, five minutes after the restart, Caion doubled his side’s lead with a header that made it over the line after clipping the left post.
By the 53rd minute Hussein claimed his second and Al Shorta’s third before Salim completed the rout 17minutes from time with a thunderous long-range effort that beat goalkeeper Ahmad Nawas from 30 yards, crossing the line after clipping the underside of the bar.
“The result doesn’t mean that we were bad as we had some good moments in the match,” said Al Jazeera Issa Al Turk. “However, our players made some fatal mistakes which gave the chance to our opponents to score four goals.
“We went into the match without any pressure as we already secured our place in the knockout stage. We should fix the mistakes that we made tonight before the next match if we want to continue as far as possible in the competition.”
