Seeb: Al Suwaiq picked up their first win of the 2012 AFC Cup campaign with a 2-0 victory over Al Ittihad at Al Seeb Sports Stadium on Tuesday that pulls them back into contention for in Group A.
Fahad Khamis and Waleed Abdalla found the back of the net for the Omani side, giving Mudafar Jabar and his team a win that moves them level on points with the Syrians as the group stage hits the halfway mark.
"This win will give us a big push especially after the good performance that we had in the game tonight," said Jabar. "We had several scoring chances and we played with our style and eventually we got the three points.
"We made some changes to the squad as we were missing some key players and we missed some chances which would have made things easier for us. We will try our best now to qualify to the next stage and hopefully we can achieve this goal."
Khamis gave his side the lead after 23 minutes when Al Suwaiq hit Al Ittihad on the counter attack, beating the offside trap before scoring past Khaled Al Haji Othman with a powerful shot.
Brazilian striker Ewerson Batata (Ewesron Eduardo Moreira) saw his second-half header come back off the cross bar while Emmanuel Ezukam had his effort ruled out for offside as Al Ittihad pushed for the equaliser.
However, with eight minutes remaining, Abdalla put the result beyond any doubt, who struck with a low shot following Harib Jamil's free kick into the penalty area.
"Congratulations to Al Suwaiq as they performed well, but we lost the game because we had some problems before the game," said Al Ittihad's coach Hussein Afash.
"At the same time, we made some mistakes and we gave the win away to Al Suwaiq. We will be playing the next match in Oman and hopefully we can come back well after this defeat."
