Pune: AFC Cup 2013 contender East Bengal’s Nigerian import Chidi Edeh scored two goals as the Kolkata-based club reduced the gap to leaders and fellow AFC Cup contenders Churchill Brothers by two points following their 2-1 I-League win over Pune FC on Friday.
East Bengal are on 36 points – two behind Churchill Brothers who have two matches in hands.
I-League veteran Edeh, who has played for almost all the top Indian clubs including East Bengal’s rival Mohun Bagan, Salgaocar Goa and Mahindra United, opened the visitor’s lead as early as in the 6th minute of the match.
Pune FC equalized through Japanese midfielder Arata Izumi in the 17th minute but Edeh grabbed a winner in the 75th minute when the visitors were awarded a penalty and the Nigerian coolly converted.
East Bengal host high-flying Malaysian side Selangor in their opening fixture of Group H where they also have Singapore’s Tampines Rovers and Sai Gon Xuan Thanh of Vietnam.
