Amman: Al Jazeera sealed a hard-fought 1-0 victory at home over Bahrain’s Malkiya Club on Matchday Two of their AFC Cup Group A tie on Monday.
The hosts came within a whisker of taking the lead within 10 minutes after Oday Al Jafal rose highest to meet Feras Shilbaya’s cross from the right flank, but his header ended inches off the upright.
The first half continued with the home side dominating but failing to break down the Bahrainis. After the restart, Suleiman Abu Zama thought he had finally given his side the lead after Shilbaya’s shot from a tight angle was parried by the goalkeeper onto the path of Abu Zama who saw his volleyed effort ricochet off the cross bar before being cleared for a corner kick.
Musa Al Taamari’s second goal of the campaign finally broke the deadlock for Al Jazeera at the hour mark. The striker’s persistence paid off as he saw his attempt from Abdullah Al Attar’s cross saved by goalkeeper Abdulkarim Fardan before he followed through to find the back of the net.
Al Jazeera travel to Oman next to face Al Suwaiq while Malkiya play hosts to reigning champions Air Force on Matchday Three next week.

Saida: Syria’s Al Wahda and Oman’s Dhofar shared the spoils in a goalless draw at Sidon Municipal Stadium on Matchday Two of the AFC Cup Group C on Tuesday.
Muayad Khouli wasted Al Wahda’s clearest chance of the opening half after he was set up by Shuaib Al Ali’s cross from a free-kick but Khouli’s 27th minute header sailed inches wide off the upright.
Bassel Moustafa had scored both Al Wahda’s goals in their opening match 2-2 draw against Al Faisaly, and was again close to finding the back of the net after the half-time break but saw his 56th minute strike from the edge of the penalty area rescued by goalkeeper Abdul Majeed.
Dhofar thought they had won the game in the dying minutes when Qasim Said broke free on the left flank and dribbled deep into Al Wahda’s penalty box before squaring for Vinicius Calamari.
The Brazilian had the goal at his mercy with the goalkeeper in no man’s land, but Calamari fluffed his lines and blasted his shot onto the crossbar from six yards out as the final whistle announced a goalless draw.
Al Wahda host Al Ansar next week on the same ground, while Dhofar travel to Amman to play Al Faisaly.

Jakarta: The 2018 AFC Cup Group H tie between Indonesia’s Persija Jakarta and Tampines Rovers from Singapore attracted 49,056 spectators at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, a record high in the AFC Cup Group Stage.
The home side fans enjoyed a spectacular victory and had much to celebrate as Persija claimed a comprehensive 4-1 win over the visitors, courtesy of Marko Simic’s hat-trick and a thunderbolt from Rezaldi Hehanusa.
The match on Wednesday ranks third overall in terms of AFC Cup spectatorship history and is just shy of the Kingfisher East Bengal and Kuwait SC semi-final in 2013 which saw 50,000 spectators attend.

Doha: Iraq's Al Zawraa and Syria's Al Jaish played out a goalless draw to earn a second point each on Matchday Two of the 2018 AFC Cup Group B on Monday.
The home side lost the services of Saad Ahmed, who hobbled off five minutes before the end of the first half, to be replaced by Mohammed Arnaout.
Defender Abdul Anizan tested goalkeeper Jalal Hassan from distance in the 62nd minute but Al Zawraa’s No 12 was well positioned to save.
Al Jaish goalkeeper Shaher Al Shakir rescued his team at the death when Amjad Khalaf let fly a left-footed effort from a tight angle with virtually the last kick of the game, but Al Shakir dived low to keep the game goalless at the final whistle, gifting his team their second point of the group.
Al Zawraa welcome Manama Club on March 6 while Al Jaish take a trip to Lebanon to play Al Ahed on Matchday Three.

Seeb: AFC Cup title holders Air Force Club left it late to beat Oman’s Al Suwaiq 1-0 in Muscat to earn their first win of the 2018 campaign on Monday.
The hosts suffered an early blow as midfielder Fahad Al Jalboubi was stretchered off to be replaced by Omer Al Fazari halfway through the opening period.
Emad Mohsen nearly put the reigning champions in front in the 58th minute after he controlled and fired from inside the box after Sameh Saeed’s cross from the right, but goalkeeper Fayez Al Rashidi produced a top drawer save to deny the forward.
Coach Radhi Shenaishel introduced winger Karrar Ali in place of defender Mustafa Mohammed five minutes from time and his faith was rewarded instantly as Air Force Club’s No. 7 found the back of the net with his very first touch, firing on the half-volley from a narrow angle to beat goalkeeper Al Rushaidi.
Al Suwaiq host Jordan’s Al Jazeera in their next AFC Cup game on March 5, while Air Force travel to Bahrain to take on debutants Malkiya in Matchday Three.
