Singapore: Warriors FC lifted the Charity Shield in Singapore on Sunday thanks to a 1-0 victory over fellow AFC Cup hopefuls Balestier Khalsa.
Argentine striker Nicolas Velez notched the game’s only goal on 28 minutes to help Singapore’s reigning S.League champions go second in the table on the first weekend of the island republic’s new domestic season.
The result will hand Warriors FC a timely psychological boost after Alex Weaver’s charges lost 3-1 at home to Persipura Jayapura in their opening AFC Cup 2015 Group E fixture last week.
They are set to travel to the Maldives to face Maziya Sports & Recreation on March 10.
Meanwhile, the defeat was Balestier’s second in a week following their opening AFC Cup 2015 Group E defeat in Hong Kong at the hands of Kitchee.
They will entertain Malaysian rivals Johor Darul Ta’zim at Singapore’s Jalan Besar Stadium also on March 10.
