FFSL’s AFC Grassroots Charter Bronze Membership renewed

Colombo: The Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL)’s efforts to continuously develop its grassroots landscape has been recognised with the renewal of its Bronze Membership under the acclaimed Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Grassroots Charter.

Since receiving full membership in March 2022, the South Asian nation has strived to implement several improvements across various aspects, including player development programmes, youth competitions, and the promotion of women’s football.

Goa: Defending champions Bangladesh confirmed their 2026 SAFF Women's Championship semi-final spot with a 4-2 win against Maldives on Thursday.

The victory meant India also advanced, with their meeting against Bangladesh on Sunday to decide the Group B winners.

Bhutan, meanwhile, revived their hopes of progression from Group A with a 4-0 defeat of Sri Lanka.

#AFCU20 China 2027 - Stage set for Qualifiers

Kuala Lumpur: The AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027™ Qualifiers are set to be a scintillating affair following the Official Draw at the AFC House in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Thursday.

To be staged between August 25 and September 6, 2026 in a centralised league system, these Qualifiers will feature the implementation of a new format as part of key reforms to the AFC’s youth competitions that were ratified earlier this year.

Designed to ensure more meaningful matches and opportunities for teams to compete against opponents of similar technical competency, a two-phase system featuring a promotion and relegation mechanism has been introduced.

Qualifiers - Group D: Chinese Taipei 1-3 Sri Lanka

Taipei: Sri Lanka closed out their AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™ Qualifiers Final Round Group Dcampaign in impressive style on Tuesday as Abdullah Al Mutairi’s side cruised to a 3-1 win over hosts Chinese Taipei at Taipei Municipal Stadium.

Goals from Rahul Suresh and Niloshan Senthurvasan in the 18th and 26th minutes respectively gave the visitors a two-goal cushion at the interval and Christopher Tiao’s 53rd minute own goal all but confirmed Sri Lanka’s victory.

Yu Yao-hsing pulled one back with a 55th minute header for Chinese Taipei but it was not enough to spark a comeback by Matt Ross’ outfit, who ended the campaign bottom of the standings without a point from their six qualifiers.

Chongqing: China PR confirmed their AFC U17 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2026™ ticket with a 4-0 win against Bangladesh on Sunday.

The victory meant China PR finished with a perfect 15 points, with Bangladesh three adrift.

Bahrain and Timor-Leste, meanwhile, completed their campaigns with victories against Brunei Darussalam and Sri Lanka respectively.

Colombo: Jude Soonsup-Bell had a debut to remember after helping Thailand defeat Sri Lanka 4-0 in their AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™ Qualifiers Final Round Group D tie on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old - making his competitive debut for Thailand - scored twice after coming on in the 66th minute to replace Teerasak Poeiphimai with the Grimsby Town forward pleased with how the match turned out.
