Uzbekistan 2027 hopefuls discover qualification path

Kuala Lumpur: Teams aiming to vie for the AFC U17 Asian Cup Uzbekistan 2027™ title discovered their Qualifiers challenge following the Draw at the AFC House in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Thursday.

The 35 teams were divided into seven groups of five to contest a single round-robin centralised league for the qualifying rounds that run from November 8 to 20, 2026.

The seven group winners will join the nine AFC representatives from the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2026 who have automatically qualified - Australia, China PR, Japan (defending champions), Korea Republic, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam - in the Finals.

Vietnam hold off Thailand to clinch title

Hanoi: Vietnam retained their ASEAN Championship title on Wednesday as Kim Sang-sik’s side twice battled back to draw 2-2 with Thailand in Hanoi to complete a 4-2 aggregate win over the seven-times champions.

Yotsakon Burapha struck in the 12th minute to pull Thailand back into the tie after losing 2-0 in the first leg in Bangkok but an own goal by Chatchai Bootprom saw Vietnam level in the 52nd minute, three minutes after Thailand’s Kakana Khamyol had fired a penalty over the bar.

 

Wanchai Jarunongkran gave Thailand late hope when he netted in the 84th minute, only to put the ball in his own net with virtually the last kick of the game to hand Vietnam a draw that completed their title defence.

Baghdad: Graham Arnold has vowed that Iraq will work to be a force in the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™ after the Australian signed a contract extension as head coach on Monday.

The new contract will see the tactician in charge of Iraq for September's Gulf Cup and the continental showpiece in January, with Arnold signing a six-month extension although the Iraq Football Association had offered a four-year deal

Bangkok: Two goals in seven second half minutes from Nguyen Hai Long and Nguyen Quang Hai earned Vietnam a 2-0 win over Thailand in the first leg of the ASEAN Championship 2026 final on Saturday to keep Kim Sang-sik’s side on course for a successful defence of the title.

Substitute Hai Long broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute with a coolly finish before Quang Hai doubled his side’s advantage with a clinical volley on the run after Do Hoang Hen’s curling cross from the right.

The teams will face off again in Hanoi on Wednesday with the Vietnamese attempting to win back-to-back titles for the first time and a fourth title in total. Thailand have won the competition a record seven times.

Chinese Taipei, Uzbekistan learn Brazil 2027 playoff path

Kuala Lumpur: Chinese Taipei and Uzbekistan have discovered their paths in the FIFA Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027 Playoff Tournament, with the two sides aiming to further increase Asia’s representation at the global showpiece.

Substitute Nguyen Xuan Son scored in the 62nd and 89th minutes as Vietnam finally found a way past goalkeeper Azri Ghani, who gave the Malaysians hope of an unlikely comeback with a performance that frustrated the home side throughout the clash at My Dinh Stadium.
 
Vietnam will travel to Bangkok to face the Thais in the opening leg on Saturday with the return to be played in Hanoi on Wednesday.

Thailand survive Singapore fightback to advance

Bangkok: Thailand advanced to the final of the ASEAN Championship 2026 despite slipping to a 2-1 loss against Singapore in Bangkok on Tuesday as Anthony Hudson’s side completed a 4-3 aggregate win to progress to the two-legged decider.

Kakana Khamyok’s 61st minute penalty proved decisive, the spot-kick levelling the scores after Harhys Stewart had given Singapore a 45th minute lead only for Pansa Hemviboon’s own goal to restore the visitors’ one-goal advantage.

Gavin Lee’s side were unable to find their way through the Thai defence for a third time, however, and Thailand will face either Vietnam or Malaysia in the home-and-away final in their quest for a record-extending eighth title.

Kuala Lumpur: Nguyen Xuan Son’s diving header and a late own goal from Faris Danish mean Vietnam hold the advantage in the second leg of their ASEAN Championship 2026 semi-final after Kim Sang-sik’s side secured a 2-0 win over Malaysia on Sunday.

Xuan Son scored in spectacular fashion in the fifth minute of first-half stoppage time to give the defending champions the lead before the unfortunate Faris steered the ball into his own net with only four minutes remaining.

The teams will meet again in Hanoi on Wednesday with Vietnam attempting to win back-to-back titles for the first time. The winner will face either Thailand or Singapore, with the Thais holding a 3-1 lead from their first leg played on Saturday.
