Zurich: The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) is pleased to note the approval of the landmark wide-ranging package of reforms by Member Associations at the FIFA Extraordinary Congress in Zurich.
The AFC considers these reforms a strong starting point and essential to achieve greater professionalism, transparency and integrity for all our Member Associations.
Speaking at the FIFA Extraordinary Congress in Zurich, the AFC President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa said: “I am pleased the resolutions on reform have been passed. The AFC had a meeting in Kuala Lumpur on February 17 to discuss these and I am proud we supported the reforms.
“But these are the first steps, not the end. It is just the beginning and we have to ensure that there are a lot more to come. By being together and consulting together we will do the best for FIFA. We have to establish unity at FIFA.”
The reforms, which were supported by 179 of the 207 Member Associations, include a distinct division of commercial and political decision-making, greater scrutiny of senior officials, and commitments to promote women in football and human rights.
In accordance with the current edition of the FIFA Statutes, the statutory amendments passed on Friday will come into effect for the members 60 days after the close of the Congress.
