Kuala Lumpur: Japan defeated Vietnam 2-1 on Friday to book their place in the AFC U-16 Championship 2014 finals.
Goals from Henry Osamu Iyoha (33rd) and Wakaba Shimoguchi (86th) either side of Pham Trong Hoa’s 70th minute strike not only put Japan at the top of the Group J standings it also ensured that even if they lose their final game against Indonesia on Sunday and Vietnam defeat the Philippines to join the Japanese on six points, the two-time AFC U-16 champions will at the expense of the South East Asians courtesy of the head-to-head record.
The winners of the ten qualifying groups and the best five runners-up will join hosts Thailand in the finals of the 2014 AFC U-16 Championship.
