Guangzhou: Guizhou Renhe won the 2013 Chinese FA Cup despite going down 2-1 to Guangzhou Evergrande in Saturday’s second leg with the Guiyang-based side triumphing 3-2 on aggregate.
Yu Hai, who scored both of Guizhou’s goals in the first leg, extended his side’s advantage before substitute Feng Junyan reduced the deficit on the hour-mark.
Guangzhou, who were without the suspended duo of 2013 AFC Foreign Player of the Year Muriqui (Luiz Guilherme Da Conceicao Silva) and fellow Brazilian Elkeson (Elkeson de Oliveira Cardoso), pulled another one back two minutes later when Dario Conca fired home the rebound after Guizhou keeper Zhang Lie had saved an initial effort from 2013 AFC Player of the Year Zheng Zhi.
Looking to add the Chinese FA Cup to their AFC Champions League and Chinese Super League (CSL) titles Guangzhou laid siege on the Guizhou goal but Gong Lei’s side stood firm and held on for a famous victory.
Guizhou’s trophy triumph also ensured they advanced to the Group Stage of the 2014 AFC Champions League, with their place in the Play-offs which had been reserved for China’s fourth-place finishers now taken by Beijing Guoan, who finished one place above the Chinese FA Cup winners in the CSL.
Guangzhou will now turn their attentions to the 2013 FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco, with Marcello Lippi’s continental champions set to face Egypt’s Al Ahly on December 15.
