Glasgow: DPR Korea kicked-off their quest for gold in the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament London 2012 with a comfortable 2-0 win over Colombia.
Kim Song-hui scored a goal in each half as DPR Korea went joint-top of Group G with three-time gold medallists the USA, who came from two goals down to defeat France 4-2 in Wednesday’s earlier fixture.
The match was delayed for over an hour after the North Koreans refused to take to the field on account of the South Korea flag being displayed on the big screens at Hampden Park instead of their own but when the match did finally kick-off Sin Ui-gun’s side appeared unruffled by the flag gaffe and dominated the encounter.
Despite holding the upper hand for the majority of the first half DPR Korea had to wait until four minutes from the interval to break the deadlock when Kim was ideally placed to deflect the ball past keeper Sandra Sepulveda as the Colombian defence failed to clear Choe Un-ju’s cross.
After spurning a number of chances to add to her side’s advantage Kim finally got her second with four minutes left on the clock when Sepulveda spilled a routine cross allowing the Korean striker to chip the ball into the Colombian net despite the best efforts of the backtracking Tatiana Ariza.
DPR Korea are next in action on Saturday when they take on France.
