Wuhan: Korea Republic were crowned 2015 EAFF (East Asian Football Federation) Men’s East Asian Cup champions on Sunday following their 0-0 draw with DPR Korea and China’s subsequent failure to beat Japan.
Despite Uli Stielike’s failing to find the breakthrough against their northern neighbours, the point they earned proved enough when China were unable to record the win against Japan that would have taken them to six points – one more than Korea Republic - and handed them the title.
Korea Republic’s stalemate with DPR Korea, which followed a win and a draw against China and Japan respectively, ensured the Taeguk Warriors landed their third regional title following previous wins in 2003 and 2008.
China, meanwhile, were left to rue what could have been, as a 1-1 draw with Japan saw them finish second in the four-team round robin tournament.
