Macau: More than 400 boys and girls have taken part in a grassroots festival held recently by the Macau Football Association.
Boys and girls under the ages of 12 and 18, as well as women, football veterans and football lovers generally attended the Macau Football Fun Day which included organised friendly games, drills, mini games and other activities.
"Macau is small but the story of Iceland in Euro 2016 inspired all the world that most important is development,” said Macau Football Association’s Technical Director Chan Hiu Ming. “We have to develop grassroots football whether it is under 12, girls or community players.
“Football should be the number one sport in Macau and by increasing the football population, people will start to develop a new football culture and start to increase awareness among the government and the public.
“We do not have professional football at this moment but with a broad-based development pyramid and talent scouting, we can also develop outstanding national players in the future"
“In September, we will organise another festival for girls and later on, a new youth league and women's league will be established. I hope we can have a more structured system which is composed of good grassroots and youth training platforms, competition and coach education.”
