Kuala Lumpur: A minute silence in respect of the victims of the Sewol ferry disaster will be observed at the three AFC Champions League matches taking place in Korea Republic this week.
The silent tribute will be observed at Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors’ match with Melbourne Victory on Tuesday and the Wednesday matches that see FC Seoul take on Beijing Guoan and Pohang Steelers clash with Buriram United.
Messages of condolence will also be displayed on the giant screens at the Jeonju World Cup Stadium, Seoul World Cup Stadium and the Pohang Steelyard.
“The AFC and the entire Asian football family extends its most sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of those affected by this terrible event,” said AFC General Secretary Dato’ Alex Soosay.
“We can’t even imagine the sorrow of those that have lost loved ones in this tragedy and our thoughts and prayers are with them.”
The Sewol ferry capsized as it sailed from Incheon to the southern island of Jeju on Wednesday, with only 174 of the 475 passengers and crew on board known to have survived the disaster.
Korean football paid its respects to the victims during the weekend’s K League matches, with all 22 clubs expressing their condolences by refraining from goal celebrations, cheering performances, and promotional events.
