Riyadh: China-based striker Chris Killen’s second-half goal was enough to see hosts Saudi Arabia lose 1-0 to New Zealand in the four-team OSN Cup friendly tournament on Thursday.
The match at the King Fahd International Stadium was locked at 0-0 until the 78th minute when Chongqing FC forward Killen struck the only goal of the game.
The Saudis will take on Trinidad & Tobago in Monday’s third-place playoff after the Caribbean islanders had battled back from 3-0 down only to lose to the UAE in the penalty shootout.
Both Gulf sides are using the four-team tournament as part of their preparations for Matchday 3 of the 2015 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers, which takes place on October 15 when the UAE are away to Hong Kong and three time continental champions Saudi Arabia face 2007 champions Iraq in Amman.
