Rio de Janeiro: China began their Women's Olympic Football Tournament with a disappointing 3-0 defeat at the hands of host nation Brazil on Wednesday (local time).
Defender Monica opened the scoring in the first half at Rio de Janeiro's Olympic Stadium, before Andressa Alves and Cristiane sealed Brazil’s victory with goals after the break.
The win, which was officiated by Malaysian referee Rita Ghani, sees Brazil assume pole position in Group E ahead of Sweden, who defeated South Africa 1-0 in the day's earlier game. China will now look to bounce back on Saturday when they face the South Africans in what already appears to be a must win encounter for Bruno Bini's charges.

Roared on by a vociferous home crowd, Brazil dominated proceedings throughout the first half with Zhao Lina saving superbly from Cristiane, and Tan Ruyin denying the striker with a goal line clearance.
Brazil’s persistence was to pay off however in the 36th minute, Monica heading home from the edge of the box after China had failed to decisively clear a Brazilian free-kick.
Try as they may, China failed to stem the Brazilian dominance after the break and could have gone further behind had Zhao not expertly tipped Fabian’s long-range effort over the bar.
With the pressure mounting on China, Brazil duly extended their advantage on 59 minutes when Andressa Alves converted Marta’s pass. That lead was stretched even further when Cristiane nodded home Andressa's free-kick on the stroke of full-time to grab her 13th Olympic goal and confirm a comfortable success for Brazil.
China head coach Bruno Bini: "Our players showed some good abilities but when you have such a difference of experience, you have to pay to learn this and tonight we paid a lot. Our aim is always to qualify from the group and if we did not have the confidence then we would not stay here. So don't worry, we will do our best in the second and third games.”
