Jeonbuk edge Ulsan for K League 1 title

Jeonju: Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors captured their third straight K League 1 title on Sunday, thanks to one of the most improbable finishes to a season in Korea Republic.

Jeonbuk defeated Gangwon FC 1-0 at Jeonju World Cup Stadium to end the 2019 K League 1 season with 79 points, tied at the top with Ulsan Hyundai FC.

Jeonbuk edged Ulsan in the first tiebreaker, goals scored, 72 to 71, and became just the second club to pull off a "three-peat" in Korea Republic.

Seongnam FC (1993-1995 and 2001-2003) are the only other team to have won three titles in a row.

Guangzhou lift eighth Chinese Super League title

Shanghai: Guangzhou Evergrande won their eighth Chinese Super League (CSL) title on Sunday, defeating Shanghai Shenhua 3-0 on the final day of the 2019 season to reclaim the crown they lost last year.

With the championship going down to the final day of the season, Beijing Guoan needed to defeat Shandong Luneng at home and hope that Cannavaro's side lost to visiting Shanghai Shenhua.

Guoan triumphed 3-2 thanks to a stoppage time goal but Evergrande were comfortable 3-0 winners over struggling Shenhua.

Winger Wei Shihao made it 1-0 for Guangzhou moments before the break when he stabbed in from close range.

AFC Executive Committee enhances future AFC Asian Cups

Hong Kong: The Asian Football Confederation’s (AFC) commitment towards upgrading its competitions to the highest possible levels continued at the AFC Executive Committee meeting in Hong Kong on Sunday with further measures aimed at enhancing the AFC Asian Cup.

Chaired by the AFC President, Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, the Executive Committee agreed that the hosts for the future AFC Asian Cups should be given more preparation time in the future – with the 2027 hosts being appointed as soon as possible.

The AFC President said: “At the AFC 29th Congress in Paris, we chose the People’s Republic of China as the next hosts of the AFC Asian Cup in 2023. And I know that China PR will deliver a world class event – in keeping with the stature of the AFC Asian Cup.
