New Delhi: June 4, 2018 will remain etched in the memory of Indian football fans forever. It was on this day that talismanic Sunil Chhetri played his 100th International match – only the second Indian footballer to do so. And he made it even more memorable with a double strike in a 3-0 victory over mighty Kenya.
While a full house clad in Blue braved the incessant rain to reach the Mumbai Football Arena hours before the kick-off, the rest of India remained glued to their television sets to witness history — #Chhetri100.
Asian Classics: Bahrain v Saudi Arabia (2010 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers)
Kuala Lumpur: Football tends to offer a lot in the way of dramatic endings. Round five of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers gave us just that when Bahrain and Saudi Arabia faced-off with a place in the Intercontinental Play-off at stake.
New Zealand, triumphant in the OFC Qualifiers, awaited the winners between 2007 AFC Asian Cup runners-up Saudi Arabia and their neighbours Bahrain who had come within a whisker of reaching the FIFA World Cup in their previous attempt four years earlier.
AFC and Member Associations underline commitment to complete 2020 club competitions
Kuala Lumpur: Competing Member Associations (MA) all agreed the central principle of finding the best way to complete the remaining AFC Champions League season in 2020 in two online meetings held on Wednesday by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
The MAs representing Australia, China PR, Japan, Korea Republic, Malaysia and Thailand in the East Zone and Islamic Republic of Iran, Iraq, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan in the West Zone also committed to agreeing a format and timetable for the 99 remaining games as soon as possible.
Recognising the travel and medical restrictions, which differ across the Continent, the AFC proposed a series of options for concluding the AFC Champions League before the start of the scheduled FIFA Club World Cup to be held in Qatar in December.
Following comments by the representatives in the meetings, the AFC will present the format and the dates of the club competitions for the final review, after which the proposal will be submitted to the AFC Competitions Committee for their approval.
