Khon Kaen is the second largest of the North-Eastern (Issan) provinces of Thailand. Neighboring provinces are (from north clockwise) Nongbua Lamphu, Udon Thani, Kalasin, Maha Sarakham, Buriram, Nakhon Ratchasima, Chaiyaphum, Phetchabun and Loei. Khon Kaen is located at the heart of Khorat Plateau. The Chi River flows through this province.

Khon Kaen is the home of tennis star Khun Paradorn Srichaphan. The province is also home of Thailand's First Olympic Gold Medallist Somluck Kamsing who won the Featherweight category in boxing of 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Khon Kaen is the commercial and political center of North-Eastern Thailand, and is well known for the silk manufacturing. The government had endorsed Khon Kaen as the export center for trade into the Indo-China Region. Khon Kaen city hosts the largest University in the North-East - Khon Kaen University.
Khon Kaen Province is subdivided into 26 districts, but there is also plan to expand it to 29 districts. The current 26 districts are further subdivided into 198 sub-districts and 2139 villages.
