Sydney: A record 800 million football fans from more than 120 countries are expected to watch AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015, which kicks off in Melbourne on January 9.
Australian fans will be able to watch all 32 matches of the biggest football tournament ever staged Down Under live in HD on FOX SPORTS, while ABC TV will broadcast all of Australia’s group matches on a two-hour delay and finals games live (if they qualify).
Football fans throughout the rest of Asia, North Africa, Brazil, Europe, New Zealand, USA and Canada will also receive live coverage of the 23-day tournament culminating in the final at Sydney’s Stadium Australia on January 31.
Host nation Australia will begin the tournament against Kuwait in Melbourne.
Asian Football Confederation General Secretary Dato’ Alex Soosay said the time zones where the matches are being played was a major factor behind the anticipated record television audience.
“The tournament is being played in a time zone similar to the largest Asian markets of East Asia while the participation of nine West Asian countries gives us confidence of the expected TV audience,” he said.
“The AFC Asian Cup has grown in stature in all aspects over the last 15 editions and I am confident that this edition will break all records in terms of attendance and television viewership.”
