Male: Maldives Minister of Youth and Sports Mohamed Maleeh Jamal expressed his hope that a successful hosting of the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup can play a role in the development of football in the Indian Ocean republic.
During his welcoming address at Wednesday’s draw for the eight-team tournament Jamal (pictured) spoke of his country’s appreciation in awarding the hosting rights of the fifth edition of the AFC Challenge Cup to the Maldives and how it could serve as a catalyst for improvement in the nation.
‘It is an honour and a privilege to host this tournament. Football is connected to our everyday lives in many ways and I think I speak for all Maldivians when I thank the AFC for this opportunity. I cannot stress enough how excited we are to be hosting this competition.”
It was touch-and-go whether or not the Maldives would be able to host the AFC Challenge Cup, with the refurbishment of stadiums to tournament standards one of many issues organisers had to address as Jamal admitted.
“We faced major challenges on the path that took us here today but we overcame those challenges and I thank everyone for their efforts. There are too many people to mention but I applaud everyone’s determination and resolve in making this happen.
“The government has spared no effort or expense to make this happen despite the current economic situation as this was an opportunity we couldn’t let slip from our grasp.
“Hopefully this will pave the way to hosting more tournaments and events as this will attract more tourism which in turn can finance more development in the country.
“I hope hosting the AFC Challenge Cup is also a stepping stone in progress for development of football in the Maldives.”
