“It is hard for me to encourage them right now,” admitted the 16-year-old forward.

“The only way I can encourage and comfort my teammates is to tell them the positives from our match, speaking to everyone of them individually.

"Despite the defeat, I believe we performed well and this is something we can build on as we continue developing," said Maulana.

Australia will play Japan, who beat Oman 2-1 in Sunday’s quarter-final, in the last four on Thursday.

Oman recovered almost immediately through Tariq Khamis Al Mashary’s header after defender Issa Khalfan Al Naabi’s own goal, but eventually fell to substitute Toyama Shoji’s 81st minute strike from close range.

Japan, Tajikistan, DPR Korea, Oman, India, Indonesia, Korea Republic and Australia complete the lineup for the last-eight which will be played on September 30 and October 1.
