Manama: Join us as The-AFC.com takes a look at the venues that will witness exciting action at the AFC U-19 Championship Bahrain 2016 which kicks off Thursday. KHALIFA SPORTS CITY STADIUM The Khalifa Sports City Stadium will host 16 matches across the four groups as well as the quarter-final and semi-final stages during the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-19 Championship Bahrain 2016.
The stadium will also be the venue for the official opening ceremony of the tournament, which will take place just before the host nation’s opening match against Saudi Arabia on October 13.
Originally built as the Isa Town Stadium in 1968, which hosted the first edition of the Gulf Cup tournament in 1970, the stadium underwent a major facelift, and was renamed Khalifa Sports City Stadium in 2007.
Over the years, the Khalifa Sports City Stadium has forged a rich history with football fans in the Gulf nation. The iconic stadium has contributed to Bahrain’s position as an international sports city after hosting nine games during the 2013 Gulf Cup of Nations.
The stadium accommodates 10,000 spectators and new facilities built during the renovations in 2007 include a medical centre, administration offices, a conference hall, VIP lounge and changing rooms.

Located in Riffa, the Bahrain National Stadium was commissioned in 1980 before opening two years later in December 1982.
