Yangon: Korea Republic and Myanmar advanced to the AFC U-22 Championship 2013 finals after beating Vietnam 2-0 and Malaysia 2-1 respectively in the last matches in Group G of the new competition’s qualifiers in Yangon, Myanmar, on Tuesday.
In the other match within the group, Chinese Taipei, who finished at fourth in standings with six points, defeated the Philippines, who are at the group’s bottom position, 2-1.
Park Young-ji (29 minutes) and Jeong Jong-hee (45+1 minutes) scored for the Koreans against Vietnam while Kaung Si Thu sent in a brace (34, 53 minutes) for Myanmar with the match’s closing goal submitted by Malaysia’s Rozaimi Abdul Rahman (90+1 minutes, penalty). Chinese Taipei got a double through Lin Chang-lun (11th minute, 31st-minute penalty) with Marvin Angeles sending in the Filipinos’ reply in the 35th minute.
Leaders Korea Republic and Myanmar finished with 13 points apiece but a nine-goal advantage favouring the Koreans relegated the ASEAN side to second spot. Hosts Malaysia finished with nine points at third position while Vietnam occupy the fifth spot with three points.
The two best teams from the seven groups, the best third-placed team and the hosts will be pitted in the inaugural edition of the championship which will serve as the Asian qualifiers for the Olympic Football Tournaments. The finals will be played on 11-26 January 2014.
