Tajikistan went into the match buoyant after having opened their campaign with a 1-0 win over African champions Cameroon but Spain were on top from the start to register their first triumph of the tournament, having settled for a 0-0 draw with Argentina on Matchday One.

Having opened their campaign with a 3-0 win over Netherlands, the point against USA took Japan to second in the Group D standings behind Senegal.

Senegal, who defeated Netherlands 3-1 earlier on Wednesday, are on six points and face Japan in the final group tie on Saturday.

Both teams entered the encounter boasting wins in their tournament debuts, with Korea Republic having defeated Haiti 2-1 and France beating Chile 2-0.

France, however, left the Estadio da Serrinha unscathed thanks in large part to their organised attacking moves.

The win places Tajikistan top of Group E after a thrilling Matchday One, which saw Spain and Argentina play to a goalless draw in the day's earlier match.

Tajikistan will be aiming to continue their fine form when they play Spain next.
