Trabzon: Okay Yokuslu scored a winner three minutes from time as Australia’s campaign of the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2013 ended prematurely following their 2-1 defeat at the hands of hosts Turkey on Friday.
The win put Turkey and Columbia, who defeated El Salvador 3-0 in another simultaneous kickoff match of Group C, through to the knockout stages of the competition.
In one of the fiercely contested matches of the tournament in front of a strong 11000 local supporters at the Huseyin Avin Aker Stadium, the Young Socceroos surprised the hosts with series of attacks before they finally broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute through Jamie MacLaren.
Ryan Williams did well down the right and when his low cross arrived in the area, MacLaren provided an emphatic finish, smashing a terrific first-time shot high into the net from 16 yards.
Paul Okon’s side could have entered into the knockout stages with that lead but it just lasted two minutes. Hakan Calhanoglu restored the parity after connecting an unstoppable right-foot shot in off the inside of the far post.
Needing to win the match, the Aussies continued to march in at the Turkish territories and spurred by a massive home support, Turkey scored the winner three minutes from time. Yokuslu brilliantly chipped the ball over Aussie goalie Paul Izzo.
