Doha: Carlos Queiroz paid tribute to his players’ efforts to pull themselves back into their clash with the United States at Al Thumama Stadium on Tuesday as the Islamic Republic of Iran crashed out of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic scored the only goal of the game eight minutes before the end of the first half to take Greg Berhalter’s side into the Round of 16 as runners-up in Group B behind England with the Iranians having to settle for a third place finish.

IR Iran's hopes dashed by USA

Doha: The Islamic Republic of Iran’s FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 campaign came to an end on Tuesday as Carlos Queiroz’s side slipped to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of the United States at the Al Thumama Stadium.

Needing at least a draw to advance to the Round of 16 in second place in Group B behind England, the Iranians missed out on a clash with the Netherlands in the next round as Christian Pulisic’s first half goal took the Americans through at Team Melli’s expense.
 
Queiroz’s outfit were unable to put on a performance to match the buoyant support of their fans, who dominated the 42,127 crowd inside the Al Thumama Stadium but were unable to will their team towards the result required to take the Iranians into the last 16.

Gareth Southgate's side sealed first place in Group B thanks to key contributions from Rashford and Foden after they were restored to the team by the England boss.

Sanchez positive despite Qatar's early exit

Al Khor: Qatar's debut FIFA World Cup campaign may have ended with three defeats but head coach Felix Sanchez was far from despondent.

The 2022 hosts' were denied a winning finish, falling 2-0 to Netherlands in their final Group A match on Tuesday.

The defeat followed losses to Ecuador (2-0) and Senegal (3-1) but Sanchez said there were only positives from their inaugural participation in the global showpiece.
