Arbil: Goals from Hawar Mulla Mohammed and Alaa Abdul Zahra were enough to see former Asian champions Iraq defeat Yemen in the first leg of the their 2014 FIFA World Cup second round qualifier on Saturday.
Veteran winger Hawar, who currently plies his trade with AFC Champions League 2011 quarter-finalists Zob Ahan after spells with clubs in Iraq, Lebanon, Cyprus, the UAE and Qatar, opened the scoring with just nine minutes at the Francouse Al Hareeri Stadium in Arbil played.
Yemen held out until the 63rd minute when Alaa Abdul Zahra netted what transpired to be the final goal as Iraq go into next Thursday’s second leg with a comfortable lead.
