Belo Horizonte: With Korea Republic's Rio 2016 quarter-final tiw against Honduras looming large, join the-afc.com as we take a look back at the side's 2012 last eight heroics against host nation Great Britain.
Korea Republic Stun Great Britain At London 2012
London 2012 saw a team representing Great Britain compete in Olympic Games football for the first time since 1960.
As the host nation, Great Britain had the right to enter into all team events and, after much toing and froing, they entered the football tournament with a squad made up of 13 English players and five Welshmen, including Manchester United’s Ryan Giggs.
Great Britain's assorted stars began strongly, topping a tricky Group A featuring Uruguay, Senegal and the United Arab Emirates with all three of their matches played in front of crowds in excess of 70,000.
In Group B Korea Republic, coached by legendary Taegeuk Warriors defender Hong Myung-bo, also advanced, thanks mainly to a miserly defence, which conceded just once in three group matches. Korea Republic’s 0-0 draws against Gabon and eventual gold-medalists Mexico were important, but the 2-1 win over Switzerland laid the foundation for progression to the quarter-finals.
