Shin’s plans pay off for Korea Republic, Torcaso building Philippines’ competitiveness

Gold Coast: Shin Sang-woo was a satisfied enough man after watching his Korea Republic side record a second straight 3-0 win on Thursday as they saw off the Philippines.

On a sunny 1pm kick-off at the Gold Coast Stadium, the 2022 finalists claimed the three points despite making seven changes to the line-up from their opening match against the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Kenji Nishioka’s first half goal secured Kim Versales’ men a slim advantage to defend in next week’s return leg.

Gold Coast: Korea Republic eased to a 3-0 victory on Thursday in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026™ to seal progress into the knockout stage.

Two goals in a three-minute first-half spell sent the 2022 finalists on their way to a 3-0 win against the Philippines, with their knockout stage confirmed following Australia's 4-0 triumph against Islamic Republic of Iran in the group's second tie on Thursday.

Defeat left the Philippines' hopes hanging by a thread, having lost 1-0 to Australia in their opener.

Gold Coast: It has been a whirlwind past few months for Jael-Marie Guy, who received her first senior call-up to the Philippines national team last November.

Fast-forward to Sunday, the United States-based forward found herself coming on at the start of the second half in their AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026™ tie against Australia, in front of a 44,379-strong crowd – the highest ever attendance in the competition’s history.

The substitute appearance was only Guy’s sixth cap, having made her debut during December’s SEA Games, where her irrepressible performances played a part in convincing Mark Torcaso to include her in the squad Down Under.

Australia’s Montemurro focuses on positives; Torcaso proud of Philippines' effort

Perth: Joe Montemurro looked at the positives after Australia’s 1-0 victory over the Philippines in their AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026™ Group A opener on Sunday.

Despite dominating 85 percent of possession, Australia managed just six shots on target, falling short of the high-scoring performance many had anticipated.

Perth: Sam Kerr marked her return with the decisive goal as Australia defeated the Philippines 1-0 in their AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026™ Group A opener at the Perth Stadium on Sunday.

While Australia will be happy to have kicked off their bid for a second title with a win, the margin of victory could have been greater as they totally dominated the tie but could only breach the stout Philippines defence once.
