UAE’s Broli targets improvements after securing progress

Jeddah: Marcelo Broli had mixed emotions after his United Arab Emirates side booked their passage into the quarter-finals of the AFC U23 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2026™ on Tuesday.

The 1-1 draw enabled UAE to finish second behind Japan in Group B but the head coach admitted he was puzzled how his team did not end up as winners.

Jeddah: United Arab Emirates booked their place in the AFC U23 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2026™ quarter-finals despite being held to a 1-1 stalemate by Syria on Tuesday.

The result saw both teams tied on four points each with UAE advancing on a superior goal difference record to set up a meeting with Vietnam on Friday.

Jeddah: Jehad Al Hussien applauded his players after Syria bounced back into contention in the AFC U23 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2026™ with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Qatar in their Group B tie on Saturday.

Head coach Al Hussien said the victory - achieved through Mahmoud Alaswad’s 85th minute penalty -  showed the character of his players as they not only overcame a heavy defeat against Japan in their opener but also injuries to key players.

Jeddah: Mahmoud Alaswad’s late penalty earned Syria a 1-0 win against Qatar in their AFC U23 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2026™ Group B match on Saturday.

The result took Syria level on three points with United Arab Emirates, who they meet on Tuesday to decide who advances together with defending champions Japan to the quarter-finals.
